In 1994 Phipps hired Richard V. Piacentini as the organization's first executive director. He would not only go on to play a key role in revitalizing the Conservatory but also transform it into a global model of sustainability. He continues to serve in this capacity today, and, in 2014, Mayor William Peduto declared Dec. 7 Richard V. Piacentini Day in the City of Pittsburgh in honor of his efforts to enrich the community; bolster quality of life in the region through world-class horticultural display, education and research programs; and build some of the world's greenest museum structures.
