The Production Greenhouse was completed in 2006. It earned LEED® Platinum for Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance in 2012, becoming the first building in the world to achieve this certification. The Production Greenhouse has an innovative open-roof system that allows for maximum temperature and ventilation control. Window operation is tied into an anticipatory Argus Control System that ensures that the facility is optimally heated and cooled by taking advantage of natural ventilation, eliminating the need for costly exhaust fans. Water usage is closely monitored and adjusted to minimize impacts during dry spells. This combination of strategies allows Phipps to operate the Production Greenhouse 33% more efficiently than similar greenhouses, helping to meet sustainability goals. Future plans include: rainwater capture and reuse for greenhouse irrigation. Although the primary focus is on the Production Greenhouse building, the site is in need of improvements for outdoor storage, rainwater management, service route loading area upgrades, fencing and control of invasive plant species. These improvements translate into potential for achieving various SITES prerequisites and many of the credits are applicable toward certification, or a sustainable practice.
