In 1971, 24-year-old Edward Vasilcik became Phipps' lead horticulturist, replacing Frank Curto, who retired in 1970 after 35 years of service to the Conservatory. Vasilcik was known for using elaborate props for the flower shows, setting an important precedent for the exhibits of today. Pictured here is one of the finest examples of his artistry.
