Oct. 28 – 30 at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, Pittsburgh, PA

If a crystal ball could show us what the world will look like in 25, 50 or 100 years, there is reason to believe it would not be a pretty sight. Environmental degradation, loss of biodiversity and all the catastrophes related to climate change will take their toll. Can the way we operate our gardens contribute to mitigating these challenges? Taking a long-term view and modeling our work on the living systems found in nature can help us adopt a regenerative way of thinking that addresses the root cause of our problems and make our institutions relevant, resilient and inspirational to others.

In this unique interactive workshop designed specifically for public garden leaders, the Phipps team and CAD (Change Agent Development) members from 7group, Penn State and Jendoco Construction will explain how principles of regenerative thinking can inform the decision-making process in ways ranging from buildings to operations to programs and even investments. The Phipps team will also walk through some of the most important sustainable design and performance rating systems (e.g. Living Building Challenge™, LEED®, WELL™, Fitwel® and Sustainable SITES™) and their benefits to human and environmental health and show how they can be used to align with and express your institutions values. We will also review a recommended process for achieving high performance buildings, costs, and how use the certification standards to influence operations. There will also be a discussion on barriers and how to overcome them.

NOTE: This workshop is designed specifically for public garden leaders; other members of staff may attend only if their CEO is joining them.
