Volunteer Spotlight: Diane Jurewicz
Phipps is well-known for our beautiful gardens, seasonal flower shows, pioneering sustainability initiatives, informative educational programs and community outreach. None of our work, however, would be possible without the knowledge and dedication of our volunteers. In this series of profiles, we meet some of the people who give their time to make Phipps possible.
Diane Jurewicz worked as an Occupational Therapist at UPMC, doing home care, for 19 years before deciding to retire. When talking about what sparked her interest in plants and gardening, Diane says, “I find it relaxing to work out in the yard and I love it when what I’ve planted actually grows and looks good.” She has always viewed her yard as a work in progress with an ongoing list of additions and improvements to be made!
In her years of being a member of Phipps, Diane always loved visiting and thought volunteering would be something she would enjoy doing during her retirement. Since 2019, she has been volunteering in the glasshouse! There is no typical day of volunteering for Diane as she helps out in many areas different areas, performing various tasks. She has helped with Discovery programs, cooking classes with Adult Education as well as watering the Tropical Forest before it is open to the public.
“Everyone is so nice and welcoming,” said Diane when asked what her favorite part of volunteering at Phipps is. She also loves spending time around the wide array of beautiful plants and flowers everytime she’s here. If you happen to see Diane on your next visit, feel free to stop and say hello!
