Volunteer Spotlight: Andrea Jackson
Phipps is well-known for our beautiful gardens, seasonal flower shows, pioneering sustainability initiatives, informative educational programs and community outreach. None of our work, however, would be possible without the knowledge and dedication of our volunteers. In this series of profiles, we meet some of the people who give their time to make Phipps possible.
Growing up, Andrea Jackson was fascinated by her grandmother who grew herbs, fruit trees, roses and other flowers in a small suburban space. She says, “I can still remember the scent of mint and dill. I was intrigued by the idea of picking herbs from the garden and using them in cooking."
The peaceful and calm atmosphere along with the endless new discoveries at Phipps are what led Andrea to pursue becoming a volunteer. She has now been a Master Gardener for 20 years! Aside from that, she is also a retired nurse and a folk herbalist meaning that she has been studying and using herbs for decades. Her fascination with herbs has remained constant throughout her life!
There are a variety of ways that Andrea can spend her day volunteering, and each way is an exciting learning opportunity! Some things Andrea does are serving as Dr. Phipps to share plant knowledge, teaching public programs or working in the greenhouses.
Andrea says, “It is easy to say and certainly true that the plants bring enormous reward but the likeminded plant people I have met at Phipps are simply the best and it has been a joy and honor to work with them.” If your seeking some plant knowledge, be sure to look out for Andrea on your next visit!
