There's always something new to see and do at Phipps! This weekly blog post provides a run-down of the latest happenings so you can plan your visit. Events listed below require no advance registration unless noted otherwise. 

Open Daily:

  • Butterfly Forest  |  Daily Starting Sat., April 22
    Watch as gorgeous butterflies emerge from their chrysalises to flutter among the blooms. One may even land on you!
  • Make the Switch at Phipps! Green Power Drive
    Switch your home electricity to 100% green power while visiting our Tropical Forest Conservatory and you can receive free Phipps membership!
  • Companion Plants: A Youth Art Exhibition
    In the CSL Green Gallery, enjoy artistic depictions of beneficial plant relationships created by high school students for the Fairchild Challenge environmental competition.
  • Tropical Forest Congo
    Explore some of Africa’s lushest landscapes and see botanical specimens never before showcased at Phipps.

Mon., April 17:

  • Make-a-Craft Mondays  |  10:30 a.m. – noon
    Create your very own Phipps masterpiece! Every Monday, children are invited to engage in nature-inspired arts-and-crafts projects using recyclable materials.

Tues., April 18:

  • Planning Your Raised Bed Vegetable Garden  |  6:30 – 8:30 p.m.  |  R.S.V.P. required
    Explore the range of materials you can use to build and fill raised beds, strategies for getting the most yield, and accessories that can be added to beds to help extend the season and ward off pests.

Wed., April 19:

  • Story Time Wednesdays  |  10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
    Kids will love listening to our storytellers weave tales about gardens, fruits, vegetables, animals and other fun topics.

Fri., April 21:

  • Earth Day Celebration  |  9:30 a.m. – 10 p.m.
    Here at Phipps, we believe that every day is Earth Day — and to celebrate the planet and our important role in keeping it healthy, we’re presenting four days of fun activities, presentations and more.
  • Little Sprouts: My Favorite Fruits  |  9:30 – 10:30 a.m. or 11 a.m.  – noon  |  R.S.V.P. required
    Kids ages 2 – 4 will learn why plants have fruit and explore some of the fruits that grow at Phipps.
  • Pot-a-Plant Fridays  |  10:30 a.m. – noon
    Every Friday, children are introduced to the important connections between people, plants and the planet by potting their own fun plants to take home.
  • Café Phipps Pop-Up Prix Fixe  |  Seatings available from 6 – 7 p.m.   |  R.S.V.P. required
    Friday evenings, we're reinventing date night as our award-winning Café Phipps transforms into a gourmet restaurant. A delicious four-course meal provides the perfect prelude to a romantic stroll through the moonlit conservatory.
  • Kids Night Out: Biology in the 'Burgh  |  6 – 8 p.m.  |  R.S.V.P. required
    Kids ages 4 – 11 will explore the fish, birds and insects in the Pittsburgh region in this special evening camp. 
  • Environmental Film Series: Inhabit  |  7 – 9 p.m.
    For this month's screening, join us to discover the world of permaculture design in the exciting new documentary film Inhabit. Post-film discussion will be led by Juliette Olshock of Fourth River Workers Guild.
  • Enjoy the Conservatory by twilight; we're open until 10 p.m.!

Sat., April 22:

    Here at Phipps, we believe that every day is Earth Day — and to celebrate the planet and our important role in keeping it healthy, we’re presenting four days of fun activities, presentations and more.
  • SEED Classroom and Observational Beehive Open Hours  |  11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
    Phipps' revolutionary non-toxic SEED Classroom and observational beehive are now open for you to discover. Drop in! 
  • Bees Please  |  1:30 p.m.
    Enjoy a presentation from Burgh Bees on urban beekeeping.

Sun., April 23:

  • Earth Day Celebration  |  9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.

  • Origami  |  12:30 – 2:30 p.m.
    Learn how to fold paper flowers with the Origami Club of Pittsburgh.
