The Night Before Winter Show: A Phipps Story
‘Twas the night before Winter Show and in the glasshouse
All the creatures were stirring, Chipmunk, Frog and Mouse.
They raced room to room to marvel with glee
At the lights draped to glow on each branch of each tree.
In a marvelous pond, several trees stood afloat
Each poinsettia decked in its bright-colored coat.
The snowflakes were shining, the ornaments fair
And in the play market sat Santa’s red chair.
From this chair Chipmunk saw, with the help of moonlight,
That the ornament birds all began to glow bright.
And then in a flutter, with the world fast asleep,
The birds came alive with a chirp, tweet and peep!
The animals all watched as they flew swiftly past
And soared high above, near the ceiling of glass.
All the creatures cavorted and frolicked and played,
And in the Palm Court, carousel horses neighed!
The animals romped until breaking of dawn
When Mouse turned to all and announced with a yawn,
“It’s time for creatures to go back in their beds
And for birds to nest and rest their colorful heads.
The show starts tonight, and they’ll need to be rested
To show off the splendor that our staff-folk invested.
Goodnight reindeer and owl, goodnight lights on each tree,
Goodnight trains, goodnight horses! You were lovely to see.”
The animals waved goodnight, filled with great cheer.
“Goodnight, Holiday Magic. We’ll see you next year!”
By the morning, the glasshouse was silent and calm
From the trees to the birds to the fronds on each palm.
Not a soul knew what happened the evening before
So they turned on the lights and they opened the door,
And people in masses came from near and from far
To admire each flower, each tree and each star,
Unaware of the glasshouse’s recent endeavor
Except for a child who was really quite clever.
This place holds more magic than anyone thinks,
She thought as she gave the reindeer a sly wink.
And the magic she saw lives inside of us all
From the young to the old, from the big to the small
If you feel in your heart and believe it is so
You’ll find Holiday Magic wherever you go.
