Fairchild Challenge at Phipps: Data Collection-Celebrate Urban Birds!
Thank you to everyone who submitted entries for Fairchild Challenge #3, Data Collection: Celebrate Urban Birds! For this challenge, both Middle and High School students were asked to become citizen scientists, collecting data for the Celebrate Urban Birds project and becoming more familiar with bird species in their own neighborhoods! Students then created a final project in the form of a poster, journal or powerpoint to share their findings. The Celebrate Urban Birds project was created by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology to welcome communities who often were excluded from bird watching throughout history. By participating in this project, students were able to collect data on urban bird species, which can used to understand how urban environments can affect different bird species.
Thank you again to all the students who have completed this challenge, and to all the families and teachers who continue to support their students participation in the Phipps Fairchild Challenge.

Developed by the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Miami, Fl., and adopted by Phipps as a satellite partner in 2008, The Fairchild Challenge offers a menu of interdisciplinary challenges for grades 2 – 5, 6 – 8 and 9 – 12, attracting students of diverse interests, abilities, talents and backgrounds. The Challenge empowers young people to engage in civic life and encourages them to become energetic and knowledgeable members of their communities.
