Employee Appreciation: Jaime Shelton

Phipps is well-known for our beautiful gardens, seasonal flower shows, pioneering sustainability initiative, informative educational programs and community outreach. None of our work would be possible without the knowledge and dedication of our employees. There is a wide array of departments at Phipps, each playing an integral role in creating a wonderful experience for our guests. In this series of profiles, we meet some of our employees and get a glimpse into what they do to make Phipps possible.

After graduating from Slippery Rock University with her degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management, Guest Services Supervisor Jaime Shelton began looking for a job in the field. Phipps stuck out to her for many reasons! Jaime describes Phipps by saying it “radiates positivity and kindness, and the beauty of the Conservatory itself is completely mesmerizing.” She admires how Phipps not only promotes sustainability but also practices it every day. Jaime has now been in her role for about a year. Outside of work, she loves to cook, spend time outdoors, watch TV and play Sims. Jaime also enjoys spending time with family and friends as well as her kitten, Pepper!

At the start of each workday, Jaime and her team prepare the Welcome Center prior to opening to the public. She also meets with her team and with representatives from each department to go over the day’s schedule. Before guests arrive, Jaime participates in a walkthrough to check that the Conservatory is ready to go. She then assists with booking group tours and jumps in wherever she is needed in the Welcome Center. Jaime really enjoys solving the different problems that arise throughout the day. At the end of the workday, she ensures that all guests are out of the building at closing time and helps shut down the Conservatory.

Jaime’s favorite part of the job is interacting with guests, especially the excited young kids that come in! She also appreciates her coworkers and the individual bonds she shares with her team members. Jaime loves to see the installation processes between shows saying, “It’s amazing to see how quickly and effortlessly they happen. Horticulture and Facilities do such an amazing job every time!” Her favorite memory since starting in her role was working her first Winter Show. Although there were challenges, Jaime enjoyed collaborating with her team to bring a great experience to guests. She also cherished the opportunity to work with people from other departments and still make connections with guests, despite the busy holiday season. Jaime is excited to share her passion with you during your next visit!
