Employee Appreciation: Heather Poling
Phipps is well-known for our beautiful gardens, seasonal flower shows, pioneering sustainability initiative, informative educational programs and community outreach. None of our work would be possible without the knowledge and dedication of our employees. There is a wide array of departments at Phipps, each playing an integral role in creating a wonderful experience for our guests. In this series of profiles, we meet some of our employees and get a glimpse into what they do to make Phipps possible.
After moving to Pittsburgh nearly three years ago, Marketing and Membership Administrator Heather Poling attended May Market at Phipps. She was smitten, explaining, “It was so fun to see all the local vendors and all the plants!” She later visited the Summer Flower Show: Monet in Bloom and decided to attend open interviews. Initially hired as a seasonal employee, Heather knew she wanted to stay at Phipps and has now been in her role for about two and a half years. “I am so proud of our environmental mission and enjoy working surrounded by so much beauty and history,” says Heather.
On a typical workday, Heather starts by responding to members’ e-mails and phone calls that came through the previous evening. Throughout the day, she spends time answering the phone and returning calls to assist members. She also works with the marketing team on social media posts and blog writing, saying, “It’s great to have to opportunity to be creative at work.” Both the Membership and the Marketing departments at Phipps benefit from Heather’s hard work!
When she’s not working, Heather loves to spend her time gardening. She often daydreams about what plants will go in her three-level terraced backyard. Heather also enjoys thrifting because, “not only does it cut down on waste, but you can find great quality clothes and housewares, and style them for an original look. It is like treasure hunting!” In the fall, Heather likes to cook and bake new recipes and especially loves stew on cold days.
Heather’s favorite memory while at the Conservatory was working her first May Market since it was such a full circle moment for her. She enjoyed spending the day outside with her coworkers and meeting members in-person! Heather’s favorite part of her role is hearing members share stories about their visits to Phipps, some even visiting since they were children. She describes this by saying, “I’ve had more than one person tell me about the Chihuly exhibit in glowing detail. It’s special to hear what Phipps means to people and how we enrich their lives.” Heather’s endless dedication helps make the Conservatory such a special place for everyone who visits!
