Employee Appreciation: DJ Hoffman

Phipps is well-known for our beautiful gardens, seasonal flower shows, pioneering sustainability initiative, informative educational programs and community outreach. None of our work would be possible without the knowledge and dedication of our employees. There is a wide array of departments at Phipps, each playing an integral role in creating a wonderful experience for our guests. In this series of profiles, we meet some of our employees and get a glimpse into what they do to make Phipps possible. 

After moving to Pittsburgh, Phipps quickly became one of Human Resource Manager DJ’s favorite places that offered him a peaceful place to connect with nature, especially during the winter. When asked what made him want to work at Phipps, DJ recalls his love of the outdoors as a child, saying, “Weather and climate shaped much of who I am today and fueled my passion for learning as I pursued my education after high school.” He also feels connected to Phipps’ commitment to sustainability and renewable energy, describing the Conservatory as “the perfect place for me to combine these values with my dedication to helping people and my commitment to lifelong learning.”

In his role, DJ says his “goal is to create a positive and productive workplace where everyone feels valued and supported, while ensuring our HR practices align with the organization's goals and legal requirements.” In a typical day as HR Manager, he addresses employee concerns, works to resolve any conflicts and helps his coworkers understand and access company policies and benefits. DJ is also involved in the recruiting and onboarding processes, frequently helping with interviews and new hire integration. Additionally, he collaborates with managers on training programs and strategically develops programs that enhance employee engagement, retention and overall well-being.

Outside of work, DJ loves to spend time with his family, often going on different adventures on the weekends! His son adores visiting him at work especially when the Garden Railroad exhibit is on display. He also enjoys running at North Park and around his neighborhood! Lastly, DJ and his family are passionate about traveling and enjoying new vacation spots when their schedules permit.

One of DJ’s favorite memories while working at Phipps is organizing and participating in staff appreciation days that celebrate the staff’s hard work and dedication. Seeing his colleagues have fun and laugh together reminds DJ of why the heart of his position is supporting and championing team members. DJ loves to see various departments come together and connect beyond their daily tasks. He describes one of the staff appreciation days as  “a meaningful moment that reinforced our collective commitment to creating a positive, inclusive and supportive work environment. The achievements of others are really what makes me happy.”

DJ’s favorite part of the job is the people he works with! He believes that the people, including employees, donors, volunteers and guests, behind the projects and goals that Phipps achieves are what make it an extraordinary place. DJ feels “grateful for the way we support each other, the way we celebrate wins together and even how we tackle challenges as one, with resilience and a shared sense of purpose.” He finds being part of a team that excels and continuously uplifts each other to be such a privilege. The support he offers his coworkers along with his clear passion for watching people succeed make DJ a perfect fit for his role in Human Resources at Phipps!
