In 1931, 800 rare orchids valued at $50,000 were donated to the Conservatory by Charles D. Armstrong, owner of the Armstrong Cork Company. This donation greatly enhanced the plant collections at Phipps, which was regarded as one of the country’s most outstanding public gardens.
