Welcome to Café Phipps
Award-Winning Food that's Good for You and the Planet
as one of the
Best Museum Restaurants in the U.S.
One of the most significant ways we connect with plants is by consuming them as food. As an extension of the Conservatory experience, Café Phipps offers a variety of dishes that awaken the senses with colorful presentations, varied textures, complex aromas and fresh flavors. Whether you are dining in or grabbing a snack on-the-go, you'll always walk away feeling refreshed.
A Healthy Planet, a Healthy You
As one of the world’s greenest public gardens and a leading participant in the Let's Move! Museums and Gardens campaign to improve our nation’s health, Phipps is committed to providing fresh, healthy food that is good for people and the planet. From how we prepare our dishes to the way we serve them, we aim to carry out our mission in everything we do.
Nestled inside our LEED® Certified Welcome Center, Café Phipps is proud to be a 3-star Green Restaurant Certified® eating establishment and Hobart Center for Foodservice Sustainability award winner with the following sustainable features:
- Organic, local and sustainable foods

- 100% compostable cups and paper products
- 96% of food and material waste is recycled or composted
- Cleaning products are biodegradable and GreenSeal™ certified

- Filtered rather than bottled water eliminates demand for plastic
A Fresh Approach
Going hand in hand with environmental stewardship is our commitment to offering you the cleanest, freshest food available, with a focus on organic and/or local produce. During the harvest season, some ingredients even come straight from our own Edible Garden. Meat, dairy and eggs used in our dishes are also locally sourced as frequently as possible.
Safeguarding the health of our young visitors, our children's menu features whole grains, organic fruits and vegetables, and ingredients that are minimally processed, low fat and low salt with no added sugar*. We have also eliminated beverages with high sugar content, including soda. Our kids’ meals are so wholesome that we have partnered with the Environmental Charter School of Pittsburgh to provide lunches for their students too.
*A small amount of natural sugar is used in desserts and other special occasion treats.
Recycle Corks with Café Phipps
We are pleased to partner with ReCORK to recycle used natural wine corks from our café and catered events. Please join our efforts by bringing your own to Café Phipps on your next visit. Together, we can give them useful second lives as flooring, insulation and more, and help ReCORK raise critical awareness about the role cork forests play in curbing climate change.
Enjoy a Phipps Splash™
As a healthy alternative to sugary soda, which is no longer served at Café Phipps, we proudly present Phipps Splash™, a delicious fruit beverage available in a variety of flavors. Try one on your next visit!
At Café Phipps, we truly go the extra mile, and we think you'll taste the difference.
