Red, Ripe and Roasted: Tomato and Garlic Festival
Aug. 25, 2013
11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Come celebrate two of summer’s tastiest crops.
Join us and Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank in celebrating two of western Pennsylvania's quintessential summer crops as our front lawn and Outdoor Garden come to life with good food and family fun for our 9th annual Red, Ripe and Roasted tomato and garlic festival.
Always a seasonal highlight, Red, Ripe and Roasted is a foodie’s dream-come-true with a focus on fresh, local produce and its many culinary possibilities. For this special event, Café Phipps will prepare and share a variety of delicious dishes to sample, Restaurant ECHO Executive Chef and Owner Brian Hammond will offer a cooking demonstration, and a farmers’ market highlighting organic and Certified Naturally Grown produce will give you an opportunity to buy plenty of tomatoes and garlic to experiment with at home. Beloved garden writer and television/radio host Doug Oster — author of Tomatoes, Garlic, Basil — and food writer Mirian Rubin, author of Tomatoes, will also be in attendance to present some of their favorite recipes and sign copies of their books.
Another popular festival activity is the Red, Ripe and Roasted tomato contest for which home gardeners are invited to enter their ugliest, smallest or largest ripe tomatoes for a chance to win special prizes. And, as always, a variety of discovery activities will engage and delight children of all ages. Other participating organizations include organizations include Let’s Move Pittsburgh; The Herb Society of America, Western Pennsylvania Unit; Western Pennsylvania Mushroom Club, Penn State Master Gardeners and Girls on the Run of Magee-Womens Hospital.
Come with a bag of fresh produce to donate to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, or purchase some fresh fruit and veggies onsite, and receive free admission to the festival and to Summer Flower Show: Glass in the Gardens until 5 p.m. Don’t miss this great event for a great cause!
