In with the Interns at Phipps

By Lorren Kezmoh, Outreach Coordinator, Phipps Science Education and Research

From tending garden beds and arranging exhibit displays to whipping up their own unique culinary creations, our high school interns are keeping busy this summer here at Phipps! 'In with the Interns' is a segment featuring our 2015 high school interns; this segment will explore what they do, learn and experience this summer during their internship. This week we will hear from two of our interns as they describe what the best part of their internship has been so far.

"The best part of my week was our work shifts. On Mondays and Wednesdays we're assigned to one of the horticulturalists at Phipps and they show us what they do. Then they give us some of the work that they do. The best part of this week was working with "Farmer Mike" in the gardens. Our group put posts up for the tomatos and cucumbers, planted some sunflowers, and added a new path to the Edible Garden. Overall, it was a fun week and it's nice to see how happy kids get when they see the plants and workers." - Doreen Smith

"This week me and the other interns worked with the horticulturalists, worked together to complete shifts, and learned in the process. At Phipps, I feel like it's always a diverse week. One day we will go to the organic food market, shop there and ask questions to end a day. During the rest of the day we might learn about making documentaries and help arrange a plant that will be shown in one of Phipps' shows. Through it all, we always have fun and treat each other with kindness and respect. I don't know any other group of young teens who were ever this polite and respectful of each other, I guess Phipps just does that to you." - Alisha Alexander
