Charles Darwin is most commonly known for his research on natural selection in finches and other animals, but he also spent a lot of time exploring and experimenting with plants in his gardens. As a participant in Darwin2009, Phipps will help visitors understand the role of genetic variability.

Teachers of grades 4-12 are encouraged to bring their students to take part in two new Darwin-inspired exhibits: Veggie Variation will demonstrate the concepts of species, variation, domestication and artificial selection; Family Trees combines the ideas of Darwin, and geneticists Gregor Mendel and Reginald Punnett with an interactive “Genetic Garden” that showcases plant reproduction and modern genetics. Furthermore, pre and post-visit lessons and staff-led classroom programs are offered to better convey the importance of these concepts to school groups that sign-up prior to their visit.
